It's true: people make a neighborhood. And this is never more true than in Washington Heights. Since 1990, Washington Heights Neighborhood Association (WHNA) has played an important role bringing together people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and concerns. WHNA includes more than 500 households that support the organization with membership dues. Its’ governing board represents the concerns of the entire neighborhood through its representatives from each of Washington Heights’ nine areas.
Every year WHNA sponsors a number of social events designed to introduce residents to one another, foster communication, and to give people the opportunity to have fun with their neighbors. Nighttime Halloween trick-or-treating, Easter Egg hunt, a summer picnic in Washington Park, and wine and beer tasting for adults have become regular events. The neighborhood has hosted numerous home and garden tours as well.
WHNA's most important contribution to neighborhood communication has been its quarterly newsletter, the Highlighter, which is delivered to all area residents. In addition to providing information about WHNA events, the Highlighter spotlights the many talents and interests of neighborhood residents and gives updates on area business development.
All of WHNA's activities are organized and carried out by volunteers. The range and quality of the association's projects are the best proof possible of their commitment to the neighborhood. Residents find Washington Heights a good place to live, and are inspired to give their time to make it even better.
